Police would like to make you aware of the following scam which has occurred in your area.

Residents are being warned about rouge traders knocking on doors and claiming urgent repairs are needed for building works, such as roofs and walls.

These scammers often pressure homeowners into quick cash payments, carry out poor-quality work, or disappear after being paid.

Common warning signs

Claiming your roof, chimney, or driveway is dangerous and needs urgent repairs.

Saying they were “working nearby” and have leftover materials.

Cash-only payment requests and refusal to give written quotes or receipts.

High-pressure tactics to stop you getting a second opinion.

No business address, no company branding, only a mobile number.

How to protect yourself

Never agree to work from an unexpected doorstep caller.

Never pay large sums of cash upfront.

Get at least 3 written quotes before agreeing to work.

Check reviews on trusted sites like Checkatrade, Trustmark, or Buy With Confidence.

Consider a “No Cold Calling” sticker on your door.

Ask for ID and verify credentials (Gas Safe, NICEIC, etc)

If you encounter suspicious individuals or think rogue traders are operating in your area, or feel pressured or suspect a scam, report it to Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice Consumer Service (0808 223 1133).

As always in an emergency call 999 if you feel threatened or believe a crime is in progress.
